Fairway woods is a subset under the broader classification of woods. Driver is a type of wood that you Tee off with and the remaining type of woods are called fairway woods, primarily because they are to be used on the fairway. The fairway woods maintain the higher length of shafts that is typical to woods but the clubhead is slightly smaller in depth. Therefore it is feasible to hit the ball off the course without a tee in case of fairway woods.

Their numbers can vary from 2 to 5 with 1 being the driver and all have interesting and cute nicknames in the golf lingo:

  • 2 wood – Brassie
  • 3 wood – Spoon
  • 4 wood – Baffy
  • 5 wood – Cleek

One thing is selecting wood for that particular shot while in the heat of the situation and the other is selecting the 14 sets going into your arsenal. Since one has the luxury of time while doing latter one should be prudent in the process. For example a friend of mine wanted to choose between 3 wood and 5 wood of different brands. Ideally the 5 wood should have given him more loft and less distance but he was surprised after spending more than $300 on this 3 wood that the 5 will do the job as good. Now in this case the whole point of buying the 3 wood is lost. We recommend you try the wood that you want beforehand by either renting it out or borrowing it from someone. Because of their rare but unique application this is the right approach. But in case you have your mind set on a brand and cant find that set nearby, we recommend that you rely on the following factors to choose one:

  • Forgiveness – Go for the maximum forgiveness rating that you can play without the clubhead coming in your way.
  • Shaft Length – Go for the maximum length that you can easily swing with.

Following are some of the better fairway woods that we have selected after trying and testing them. Please link on the individual fairway woods to get a more detailed analysis in order to make an informed decision. Also this will help you understand how the best golfer’s pick their equipment::
