What are Golf Iron Sets?
The standard golf iron sets have nine numbered irons from 1 to 9. These different numbers denote different loft and golf iron length. The lowest numbered iron that is the 1-Iron has the longest shaft, measuring about 39.5” in length and this iron is also called the driving iron. The highest numbered iron that is 9-Iron has the shortest shaft measuring about 35.5”. Apart from these numbered irons there are different types of wedges like the sand wedge, pitching wedge, lob wedge, and the gap wedge.
The numbered irons in the golf iron sets are classified in three different categories. From number 1 to number 4 irons are called the ‘long irons’, from number 5 to number 7 irons are known as the ‘mid irons’ and from 8-iron to various wedges are the ’short irons’. The longer irons of the golf iron sets are used for playing low and straight shots that will cover long distance. The shorter irons are used for playing the chip shots or for shots that are approaching the putting greens. This is because the longer irons are designed to cover longer distance while the shorter irons are perfect for playing precision shots. The wedges are mainly used for playing shots at specific places. Like the sand wedge is used to play the ball from the sand hazards and lob wedges are used for playing extraordinary high shots or the lob shots.
Now these are the different type of irons that are found in the standard iron sets. Not all these golf irons are carried by the golfers in their golf club sets. The most common irons in the golf iron sets of most of the players are numbered irons from 3 to 9, a sand wedge and a pitching wedge. Of course the type of the golf course and the location of the course and the weather of the day are also considered by the golfers while choosing golf irons.
